Welcome to Plantsman's Corner

Plantsman's Corner is the solo project of Malcolm Hockham, one half of the formidable "Eggleston Hall Gardens" partnership. Perhaps Plantsman's Corner is best summed up in a quote from a recent radio interview with Malcolm...

"They say gardening is the new Rock & Roll... I doubt that, but like anyone whose ever been in a band, there's a desire to express yourself creatively, develop your own ideas, or in my case, propagate and grow the plants I've most admired in a lifetime of gardening. Simplistic enjoyment of the natural world and in particular the inherent beauty and magic found within the plant kingdom could change the nature of man…. I've yet to meet a genuinely miserable gardener..."

I hope you find something of interest on your visit to this Web site, which is intended not only to catalogue some of our plants but as a resource of information and honest opinion about those plants. This information, gleaned from 40 years experience, is open, personal and freely offered, as are most things in the natural world.

Plantsmans Corner will be opening to the public on the first and third Sundays of the month from April till October 2014 until I am dead or just plain knackered.

The Grower The Philosophy The Plants
The Diggers Song (Extract) In 1649... To St George's Hill A ragged band they called the Diggers came to show the peoples will They defied the landlords, they defied the laws They were the dispossessed reclaiming what was theirs. We come in peace they said, to dig and sow We come to work the land in common and to make the waste land grow This earth divided we will make whole So it can be a common treasury for all The sin of property we do disdain No one has any right to buy and sell the earth for private gain By theft and murder they took the land Now everywhere the walls rise up at their command. They make the laws to chain us well The clergy dazzle us with heaven or they damn us into hell We will not worship the God they serve The God of greed who feeds the rich while poor men starve.
