Hedychium

14th October, 2008

Hedychium
Like yesterdays plant this another swap with Michael Wickenden and another interesting tropical looking plant to add a touch of the exotic to the late summer garden. Hedychium densiflorum 'Assam Orange' is a relative of the culinary ginger...which unfortunately makes me fart when in food; fortunately this is not used in cooking as far as I'm aware but is really stunning to look at in the late summer/early autumn border, however, its roots do have that typical ginger smell. The 'canna' like leaves are also interesting and it grows to about 4ft tall.
