Sour Kate
27th October, 2008
The famous gardener Margery Fish had a favourite Penstemon from her garden called 'Unripe Grapes', which was described as a '3ft plant of soft purple-blue with an iridescent bloom', this plant later became the variety we know today as 'Sour Grapes'.
There is also this variety, of which I am particularly fond for it's more spreading, lower growing habit. Having almost the same flower as 'Sour Grapes' which is genuinely a delightful blue, 'Catherine De La Mare' has all the same attributes only on a more lax growth, which makes it ideal for tumbling over stones, walls, stumps etc, and generally softening edges. Half as tall as its illustrious cousin it flowers long and hard, proven by today's image which was taken this very morning.
