Hedgehog Shagging
17th August, 2010
"I'm only sleeping" might be the title of a Beatles song, it is also the one eyed, tired look I got from this hedgehog. He opened one eye, twitched his nose a couple of times, gave a disdainful yawn and went back to sleep in the late summer sun for another hour.
I have several hedgehogs in the garden (and very few slugs) and have watched their behaviour with a degree of amazement. The two most striking behaviour patterns were the nudging out the way of other hedgehogs beneath the bird feeders when they are scoffing the spilt bird feed, and the sheer savagery in the way they eat a dead bird.....I do not know where they found it, I doubt they caught it, but they tore it to shreds as if at a medieval banquet.
All life is found in a garden, and such things as one would never expect to witness can be observed completely out of the blue.....I now have a video camera on hand to attempt the capture of some rare footage of shagging hedgehogs......Highly valuable by all accounts.
