A Slight Dilema 2/2
18th August, 2010
The second brood of swallows at Plantsmans Corner have hatched and are, as with all fledgelings, ravenous. You will see from todays image that their staple diet at the moment seems to be butterflies....I have had a count up of the discarded wings and there are over six hundred. At two wings apiece that's over 300 butterflies, and the swallows are only about a week old!
The only consolation I can find is that the parents would simply find somewhere else to nest if I stopped them from using the potting shed....as is much quoted "nature is red in tooth and claw".......I was happy when I thought they were just scoffing aphids, now they are ranking alongside the bloody hedgehogs in viciousness......And don't get me started on Ladybirds, those little bastards are worse than the others put together.....kids would never have Ladybird buttons or books if their parents realised the full extent of a ladybirds genocidal tendencies! Their ugly as sin before they pupate as well.
