A compact upright cultivar with round leaves clustered at the ends of short shoots. The leaves emerge bright red and deepen to purple as summer progresses, becoming even brighter red again in the autumn,
Nursery Notes
Pretty much a unique cultivar and habit. Must be grafted.
Opinion
A superb maple that is good in restricted soil, such as rockeries or containers, it was originally grafted by Richard P Wolff from a 'witches broom' found on an old atropurpureum at Red Maple Nursery (USA) in the 1980s.
I have some doubts about its hardiness further north, however I have planted one in an exposed position during 2007 at Plantsmans Corner and it ain't dead yet, in fact it's thriving. Interestingly it was planted in ground that I needed a f***ing crowbar to help make the hole! Maples seem to like tight roots.
