Cornus florida 'First Lady' (American Dogwood)

Common Name

American Dogwood

Soil

Evenly moist, neutral to acid

Aspect

A little afternoon shade is perfect. Full sun if kept moist.

Height

6-8ft

Action and Timing

Variegated form. White bracts, leaves are dark green in the middle with irregular margins of chartreuse and gold. Good autumn colour in all shades of purple, red, and gold.

Nursery Notes

Propagate by grafting. Superb in a dark corner as it lifts the darkness. and stands out well.

Opinion

In the US it is often described as a 'screamer'. The sort of plant really jumps out at you with its beauty or contrast. While it is good in a dark corner, too dark and you lose some of the summer variegation. It is one of the variegates that will also take full sun if need be. Delightful and dramatic.
