Eryngium alpinum

Eryngium alpinum (Sea Holly)

Common Name

Sea Holly

Soil

Fairly dry crap soil is good. Avoid winter wet if possible

Aspect

Full sun

Height

2ft

Action and Timing

Wide branching plant with masses of metallic blue flowers throughout July and August. Dries well.

Nursery Notes

Probably best propagated from root cuttings late winter early spring time. Seed is reasonably good, though can be variable. Division is practiced by some, though I find this damages the mother plant too much, which is not the f***ing point really.

Opinion

I love all the blue Sea Hollies without exception, it's the spiny bastards that look like succulents or aloe vera plants that I object to.
