Rudbeckia nitida 'Juligold'

Rudbeckia nitida 'Juligold' (coneflower)

Common Name

coneflower

Soil

Reasonably fertile and heavier, not dry thin soils.

Aspect

Full sun or partial shade

Height

7ft+

Action and Timing

Flowers from midsummer well into autumn. The flowers have reflexed petals and a central cone that starts green and darkens with age.

Nursery Notes

The flower arrangers say this is good for cutting. Plants can be raised from seed, but if you like your selection or that of someone else, then division is the only way to guarantee an exact copy, this can be done anytime from autumn to spring.

Opinion

It is easy, only a nob could fail to grow this plant. It is a big bugger but it is still a wonderful bold subject for the back of a border. Some gardeners get sniffy about rudbeckias...I do not. Their flowers are like sunshine in the border and the flowering period is long and floriferous, though you do need to like yellow. Dead heading helps extend the season even more.
