Veronicastrum virginicum Roseum

Veronicastrum virginicum Roseum (Culver's Physic or Culver's Root)

Common Name

Culver's Physic or Culver's Root

Soil

Reasonably fertile, humous rich.

Aspect

Sun or partial shade

Height

5-6ft

Action and Timing

Long stems of pinkish off purple flower spikes with good breaks of smaller spikes below the dominant bloom, these are borne from mid-summer into autumn.

Nursery Notes

Propagate by seed or spring divisions. Seed needs a damn good chill so best sown in winter with no heat......stuff all the fridge nonsense, there are no chill cabinets in the natural world.

Opinion

A great plant for adding height to the border, either typically at the back or as used here in my home garden coming up through mid level perennials. Your choice. The type species of Veronicastrum was introduced into these islands from Virginia (the clue is in the name) around 1714, it is a good architectural plant, I just dislike the expression! Also known as; Virginian Speedwell; Beaumont's Root; and Black Root.
